ROBERT W. BISHOP SR.

Robert W. Bishop Sr. of the 1400 block of Huntington Crescent, died March 2, 1996, at DePaul Medical Center.

Mr. Bishop was born in Brookline, Mass., on July 6, 1918, and spent his childhood years in Newton, Mass. He entered the retail business as a photographer and later became a manager in the millinery business. A transfer brought he and his family to Norfolk where he opened and managed the Rice's-Nachman's Janaf store for 20 years, until his retirement.

He was a president of the Virginia Beach Optimist Club, Lafayette-Winona Civic League and Janaf Retail Merchants Association.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Taylor Bishop; a daughter, Bonnie B. Burns of Bishop, Ga.; three sons, Bob, Bruce and Barry Bishop, all of Norfolk; a brother-in-law and wife, Frank and Fran Taylor of Florida; two sisters-in-law, Helen B. White of Florida and Irene Bishop of California; one cousin, Mrs. Sheldon Corner of Virginia Beach; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his twin brother, John.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 5, at 11:30 a.m. in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Judith Meyer. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the American Lung Association of Virginia, 5349 E. Princess Anne Road, Norfolk, Va. 23502, or the American Cancer Society, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23513.
