NORMAN AUSTIN

Norman Austin, 73, of the 1300 block of River Oaks Drive, died March 4, 1996, in a local hospital.

He retired from DePaul Hospital in 1989. He was also retired from the Navy after 20 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a native of Philadelphia. Mr. Austin was a member of Abyssinia Baptist Church, Norfolk, where he was a member of the Mens Chorus and Sunday school. He was also a member of the Progressive Lodge No. 80 Prince Hall Masons.

He is survived by his wife, Magalene Austin; daughter, Joe Ann Nichols of Courtland; sister, Edith J. Lee of Philadelphia; three grandchildren, Annetta, Beverly and Carolyn Nichols; six stepchildren; a host of family and friends; and two close friends, Charlie Bates and Brother Fox.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday by the Rev. Frank Guns in Abyssinia Baptist Church, 2816 Colley Ave. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park with military honors. A wake will be held Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Friday. The family will assemble at noon Friday at the residence for the procession to the church. Hale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
