Eight Norfolk-based Navy officers driving to a meeting near Alicante, Spain, are credited with rescuing three motorists from a car that overturned in front of them.
The officers, from the destroyer Conolly and Destroyer Squadron 26, which is assigned to the Norfolk-based ship, said the car ahead blew a tire Sunday and overturned.
The men in two Navy vehicles removed two of the people from the car who were relatively unhurt. The driver was trapped and suffered head injuries.
With traffic speeding past the damaged car, the officers controlled traffic while Lt. Glenn Price, of Wallace, N.C., entered the crushed car to control the driver's bleeding. Lt. Joe Kochan, of Sterling Heights, Md., a physician from the Conolly, administered first aid, until an ambulance arrived.
The other officers were Capt. John Morgan of Reston, Va., the commander of Destroyer Squadron 26; Lt. Cmdr. Steve Hampton of Brookfield, Wis.; Lt. Cmdr. Art Galpin of Warminster, Pa.; Lt. John Esposito of Temple Hills, Mass.; Lt. j.g. Kevin Hanson of Maple Heights, Ohio; and Ensign Seth Evans of Virginia Beach.
