MAURY POSTS BOTH THE PLAYER AND COACH OF THE YEAR

After Maury's unbeaten streak in the regular season, it's no wonder the Commodores' Ike Richardson is the Eastern District basketball Player of the Year and Jack Baker is the Coach of the Year.

After winning 23 consecutive, Maury lost in the first round of the Eastern Regional to Green Run.

Richardson, a 6-foot-1 senior guard, made the first team for the second consecutive year as selected by the five coaches. The Commodores' go-to player, he averaged 16.3 points, 7.5 rebounds and two steals per game.

``I used to get tense when I'd see the box-and-one and the one they were coming after was me,'' he said. ``But this season, I just let my game come to me. After a while, I'd get to the point where I know I can just take over the game.''

Other first-team selections are Maury's Ricardo Trevisan, Lake Taylor's Toot Young, Granby's Tiran Matthews and Booker T. Washington's DeWayne Jacobs.

Trevisan, who transferred from Granby, was the big man for the Commodores at 6-9. He shot 69 percent from the field and averaged 12.8 points, 10.5 rebounds and two blocks per game.

Lake Taylor competed for the district championship for the first time in a decade, and a big reason was Toot Young. Young averaged 15.4 points per game in leading the Titans to a 5-3 district record.

Matthews, a 6-3 senior, led the district in scoring with 17.3 points per game after rebounding from a knee injury last year.

Jacobs, a 6-4 senior guard, scored his 1,000th point for the Bookers this year and finished with a 15.8 average.

Newcomer of the Year honors went to Maury's Stacy Gregg and Booker T.'s Terry Gray.

Second team honors go to Norview's Andre Jones and David Corprew, Lake Taylor's Brian Kelly and Antonio Harrell and the Bookers' Gray.

Honorable mention selections are Maury's Tommy Spruill and Gregg, Lake Taylor's Darnell Whitaker, Booker T.'s Kevin Fuller, Granby's Charles Banks and Norview's David Martain. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
