I oppose pending legislation that mandates automatic fines for motorists caught not wearing seat belts.
Abraham Lincoln said the purpose of government is to do that for the people which they cannot do for themselves. Certainly, the wearing of seat belts is an area where the people of Virginia are perfectly capable of deciding for themselves; they do not need the state to tell them what to do.
