ERNEST L. BAYTON JR.

Dr. Ernest Linwood Bayton Jr., a retired dental surgeon, died March 6, 1996.

He received his pre-dental curricular at William and Mary, Norfolk Division, and was a graduate of the School of Dentistry of the Medical College of Virginia and practiced dentistry in Portsmouth for 52 years.

Dr. Bayton was a decorated officer, who served as regimental dental surgeon with the combat medics of the 115th Infantry, 29th Infantry Division and participated in the D-Day landings on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France and through V-E Day in the European Theater of Operations. He was a life member of Tidewater Dental Society and the Virginia State and American Dental Associations. He served as president of the Portsmouth Dental Society and the Seaboard Dental Study Club of Norfolk, and also served on the Medical-Dental Staffs of both local hospitals.

Dr. Bayton was a member of the Portsmouth Kiwanis Club for 43 years and a member of Naval Masonic Lodge (NU)100, A.F. and A.M. He was a lifelong member of Calvary Baptist Church and served on the Board of Deacons, Trustees and taught Sunday school for 30 years. He was a member of the 29th Division Association, the Portsmouth Historical Society, the Titanic Historical Society and the Disabled American Veterans, Local Chapter 22.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, June Poindexter Bayton; a daughter, Linda de Treville, and her husband, John, of Richmond; a son, Robert Bayton, and his wife, Debra, of Portsmouth; a granddaughter, Lauren de Treville of Richmond, and a host of loving family and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Philip Parker. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
