LOUISE H. GARRETT

Louise Hayes Garrett, 90, of the 400 block of West First St., died March 6, 1996, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Garrett was born in Dillon County, S.C., and was a member of Ahoskie First Baptist Church where she served as librarian. She was a graduate of Limestone College and retired as a teacher and librarian with the Hertford County Public School system after serving almost 40 years. Mrs. Garrett was a member of the board of trustees of the Ahoskie Public Library, and was active in many other community and civic organizations including The Gallery Theater, Ahoskie Women's Club, Ahoskie Garden Club, and The American Cancer Society.

Survivors include two sisters, Elva Privette of Florence, S.C., Lois Keels of Cheraw, S.C.; two brothers, Swintz Hayes of Emerald Isle, N.C., B.P. Hayes of Portland, Ore.; four sisters-in-law, Ann Hayes and Nelle Hayes, both of Lake View, S.C., Frances Garrett of Newport News, Va., Miriam Stephens of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother-in-law, Ernest Petteway of Kinston; several nieces and nephews; several great and several great-great-nieces and nephews; and a host of loving friends.

The funeral will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. by Dr. Jesse J. Croom and the Rev. Blake Hayes in Ahoskie First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Ahoskie Cemetery. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to Ahoskie First Baptist Church library fund, or a favorite charity.
