REVITALIZATION LEADERS TO GO HUNTING FOR IDEAS

Lenora Jarvis-Mackey, president of the River City Community Development Corp., and state Rep. William C. Owens Jr., D-Pasquotank, will take a tour April 3 of two eastern North Carolina communities where neighborhood revitalization is in progress.

Jarvis-Mackey said this week a number of other Albemarle community leaders are scheduled to make the tour to get ``a first-hand look'' at the work that community renewal corporations have done in Wilson and Rocky Mount.

The tour of Wilson and Rocky Mount is being made possible through help from the Wachovia Bank, Jarvis-Mackey said.

The River City panel, under Jarvis-Mackey's leadership, is playing an increasing role in bringing help to distressed communities in the Elizabeth City area.

Jarvis-Mackey's organization works with local government as well as the private sector to rebuild and revitalize run-down neighborhoods.

A major neighborhood revitalization effort in Elizabeth City is now moving ahead with planning and assistance from the River City agency.

``The Shepard-Martin-Cale Community (in Elizabeth City) has a proud history of dreaming great dreams and bringing them to reality through the buy-in and involvement of its citizens,'' Jarvis-Mackey said.

In addition to Owens' promised support, state Sen. Marc Basnight D-Dare, president pro-tem of the North Carolina Senate, also praised Jarvis-Mackey for her work.

``The River City Community Development Corporation should be proud of its ability to serve as a catalyst in helping to shape a vision and a strategic plan to work in distressed areas and communities,'' Basnight wrote Jarvis-Mackey on Feb. 29.

``I fully support this project,'' Basnight added. by CNB
