SPORTS EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK

MACHO, MACHO MEN: A modified version of Ultimate Fighting comes to town Saturday when the U.S. Vale Tudo Championships hit the gym at Bayside High.

The big difference is that fighters in Vale Tudo - which means ``anything goes'' in Portuguese - will wear gloves and cannot strike an opponent with their fists while they have them on the ground.

Other than that, it's the same full-contact, use everything you've got, beat them before they beat you, choke them into submission, action that has become so popular on Pay-Per-View.

The 10-fight card begins at 7:30 p.m. and will feature bouts in five weight classes from 140-under to 201-pound and over heavyweights. Tickets can be obtained at the FDC Academy of Martial Arts on Virginia Beach Boulevard.

Several of the bouts will be for championships, and one of the most interesting will be between a Navy SEAL and an Army Special Forces team member. In that fight, Dale Comstock - ranked No. 2 in the World Kickboxing Association and hand-to-hand combat instructor for the Green Berets - will take on All-Navy wrestling champion Tim Szymanski in a middleweight fight.

In a middleweight championship, Scott Turner - ranked tops in Muay Thai and Brazilian jujitsu fighting - will take on U.S. shootfighting champion Ken Parham. Both are from Virginia Beach.

Nick Starks - the No. 2 man in heavyweight shootfighting - faces John Taylor of Virginia Beach in a heavyweight championship fight.

For more information on fight night, call Max Coats - who is co-promoting the fight with Frank Cucci of FDC Academy at 379-6522 or Cucci at 497-2847.

BEACH JAMBOREE: The Virginia Beach Sports Club throws its annual Jamboree awards gala Monday at the Sheraton Beach Inn at the Oceanfront. The social hour begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 and the program at 8.

This year's guest speaker will be U.S. Naval Academy football coach Charlie Weatherbie.

The club will honor a host of outstanding high school athletes, as well as presenting its sportsperson of the year award.

Tickets - from which the club helps pay for its annual scholarship program - are $25 and can be obtained from Sheldon Corner at 428-1731.

OMISSION: Information on Kempsville field hockey standout Lesley St. Denis was accidently left out of the all-district story that ran in these pages in December.

St. Denis was a co-captain and the team's offensive MVP - scoring eight goals to go with three assists. An honor roll student, she plans to stick with the sport during the summer as a player, coach and referee with the Virginia Beach Hockey League's indoor and outdoor programs.

GO FIGURE: Kempsville Middle schooler Colin Shaw and John B. Dey Elementary's Tyler Rosenberg will compete in the juvenile pairs competition at the Kodak Junior Olympics April 10-13 in Chicago. The pair are members of the Tidewater Figure Skating Club and are coached by Mary Hutchinson at Iceland of Virginia Beach. by CNB
