THE FIRE ESCAPE, the only all-ages club at the oceanfront until it was closed down late last year, has been struggling to resurrect itself. Recently, the club surfaced at various church buildings in Virginia Beach and also at a family health and fitness center in Portsmouth.
Right now, the Fire Escape owners really love the people at Jungle Golf (y'know, that place on Pacific Avenue with the wrapped-up palm trees) who let them build a stage for bands in their game room, which the Fire Escape is using rent-free. At least until the end of March.
After that they will again be looking for a place to hold their concerts, as well as someone who will take the totally unpaid and unappreciated job of manager. Good luck.
But for the time being, there are a few really good shows coming up in a few different spots:
These shows are at the Jungle Golf location:
This evening is Pocket Change and Panoply, a band that at first glance makes you think ``Hootie!'' and after the show you're like ``OK, not Hootie!''
On Saturday, the band is Dodavahu and Sydney Leather. I have been a fan of Dodavahu for a while and would recommend this show to those who enjoy really funky hardcore, and as for Sydney Leather they're still a bit spaz, but much improved from the first time I saw them.
On March 23, Merge opens for The Measles. Now if this is Harry Gore and the Measles, then go. But if some band has ripped off their name, protest. To find out for sure listen for them to change the schedule on the F.E. hotline, 459-5724.
At Virginia Beach Christian Church on Great Neck Road is a Fire Escape-sponsored concert April 2 featuring Sixpence None the Richer and Black-Eyed Sceva. Ta-kow, I've been waiting forever for this show. Sixpence is kinda Sundays-ish and Black-Eyed Sceva just plain rocks. Tickets are $8 at the door but it's such a good show, who cares? Fold Zandura also has a tentative date in early May, pending a venue.
Now, one more thing. I need six local high school students to participate in a sort of entertainment experiment. Qualifications include: creativity, responsibility and an aversion to boredom. The results of our experiment will be reported in an upcoming Teenology story. To nominate yourself, call 640-5555 and enter category 8989. Please leave your name and phone number. MEMO: Alicia Luma is a homeschooled junior from Norfolk. If you have an
entertainment tip or a comment on her column, call INFOLINE at 640-5555
and enter category 8989. by CNB
