OFFICER ADDED

An additional patrol officer will join the Nags Head police force April 1, and a sergeant's position will be converted to a lieutenant's post.

The Nags Head Board of Commissioners said Wednesday the changes will cost the town about $7,500 for the rest of the 1996 fiscal year - and an additional annual expenditure of about $30,000, not including the cost of a new patrol car. A total of 18 sworn police officers will be employed by Nags Head after April 1. Three civilian officers also are on staff.

Town Manager Webb Fuller said the extra police officer is needed because the town is growing significantly. ``This past calendar year, we issued over $21.6 million in building permits - which represents a 52 percent increase over the value issued in 1994,'' Fuller said. ``Additionally, sales tax receipts have increased by 4.6 percent.''

Three shift supervisors in the Nags Head Fire Department also will be converted to captains, town board members voted Wednesday. Each of those officers will be promoted from a grade 11 to a grade 12 position and will receive a 7.5 percent annual pay increase. The promotions will cost town taxpayers about $6,400 a year, town officials said. A total of 10 paid firefighters are employed by Nags Head's department. by CNB
