ELAINE B. BOWDEN

Elaine M. Burns Bowden, 67, of the 500 block of Taft Drive, died March 5, 1996, at Portsmouth General Hospital.

She was a foster care parent for the Portsmouth Department of Social Services for 20 years. She was a native of Portsmouth and a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Portsmouth, and the Ladies Usher Board. She was also a member of Smith Tents (NU)41, Order of Tents.

Survivors include five daughters, Gwendolyn B. Black, Celestine Riddick, Darlene Whitfield, Stephanie Bowden and Denise Jones, all of Portsmouth; seven sons, Winfred Elliott of Washington, D.C., Reginald L. Elliott, Ronney Elliott, Allen Bowden Jr., Duwane Bowden, all of Portsmouth, Cornell Elliott of Alexandria, La., Roderick K. Bowden of Woodbridge, Va.; a sister, Christine Walker of Chesapeake; a brother, Christopher Burns Jr. of Portsmouth; two stepbrothers, Joseph Burns of Portsmouth, Richard Burns of Washington, D.C.; 43 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; stepmother, Mary Burns; stepfather, Thomas Bowser; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Marion Bowser and Christopher Burns Sr.; her brother, Walter Burns and her stepsister, Joann Burns.

The funeral will be conducted at noon Monday at Ebenezer Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Gaines. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Monday. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
