Melvin Benjamin Boykin, 79, of the 700 block of Maltby Ave., died March 8, 1996, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Mr. Boykin, a retired bellman from the Thomas Nelson Hotel, was a native of Norfolk and was the son of Matthew G. and Georgianna Jones Boykin. Mr. Boykin was a dedicated member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Norfolk, and was a member of the Board of Deacons, Men's Chorus, and the Men's Bible Class. Mr. Boykin was extremely civic-minded. He was president of the Brambleton Civic League and worked very diligently to help restore central Brambleton to its former prominence. He was also a member of Plumbline Ministry and the Inner City Federation of Civic Leagues. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Edna W. Boykin; three daughters, Melvena A. Gregg of Chesapeake, Edvena A. Foreman of Norfolk, and Natalynn B. Roman of Chesterfield County, Va.; a brother, Samuel L. Boykin of Norfolk; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He will also be sadly missed by several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
The funeral will be conducted at noon Monday at Shiloh Baptist Church, 745 Park Ave., by the Rev. John H. Foster. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Viewing will be Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. at Riddick Funeral Service. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Monday. The family will be at the residence.
