The payable date for 1996 business, professional and occupational licenses has been extended to May 1.
James A. Fillion, commissioner of the revenue, announced the extension due to the concerns and confusion on the part of some businesses when receiving their tax bills this year.
Last year, the city amended the due date for license payments in accordance with the model ordinance adopted by most Virginia localities. The ordinance's purpose is to make the license due date of March 1 the same throughout the state.
Before this year, Portsmouth had a due date of May 1. The due date extension will allow for payment through May 1 without penalty.
