Helen Fooshe, who has spearheaded Portsmouth's Face to Face with Race study groups, will receive the Mary Helen Thomas Award from the Young Women's Christian Association of South Hampton Roads at a dinner March 20.
The presentation will be made at the YWCA's annual Winner's Dinner, which will begin at 6 p.m. at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott Hotel. Dinner speaker will be Jane Margaret O'Brien, president of Hollins College.
The award has been given annually since 1987 to honor Thomas for ``breaking down barriers of racism through the YWCA swim program.''
Fooshe will receive the award for her efforts to establish the Face to Face with Race study circles to promote communication among races in South Hampton Roads.
A special award will be given to Raymond Kirckof, who intervened in a domestic dispute and saved a woman who was being stabbed by her husband.
The dinner also will honor 12 women for outstanding service to the community. They include two Portsmouth women, Mary Ruth Clowdsley and Dorothy Valentine.
