Virginians clearly favor Republican Bob Dole when it comes to giving money to presidential candidates.
The Senate majority leader has raised $960,229 in Virginia compared with $528,500 raised by President Clinton in the state, according to an Associated Press analysis of presidential campaign giving in all 50 states. The figures include the amount raised in 1995 from donors who gave $200 or more, based on Federal Election Commission reports.
Texas Sen. Phil Gramm collected $194,645 from Virginians before he dropped out of the race for the GOP nomination.
Former Tennessee Gov. Lamar Alexander, who also abandoned his GOP presidential bid, collected $155,150 in Virginia.
Two Republican candidates who remain in the race - Pat Buchanan and Steve Forbes - have raised $58,660 and $20,000 in Virginia, respectively. Both are well behind Dole in the delegate count.
The AP's analysis of the top 100 zip codes where the money comes from included three northern Virginia communities - McLean, Arlington and Alexandria.
Virginia tends to favor Republican presidential candidates when it comes to voting, too. The state last voted Democratic in a presidential election in 1964.
