I appreciated the opportunity to read the March 3 Commentary section, and I think many of the remarks of Labor Secretary Robert Reich were ``right-on.'' The headline ``Working but losing'' really summed it up.
I'm always interested in the comments of those who are involved in downsizing (AT&T, Virginia Power, state government, et al.) who speak of increasing efficiency, reducing costs, making a better product, providing a better service, etc., with a kind of implied message that all of us will be better off. Who will be better off? And how? I think they're misleading themselves, or rather trying to mislead us in buying into their strategy.
I don't see a lot of positive effects. I see increased instability in our society as downsizing impacts individuals and their families and the operation of our communities; a cold disregard for others and their plight; little regard for the common good; and money as the bottom line - with any profit going into the pockets of those who already have enough but have persuaded themselves that they need more.
When will we understand that we are all in this together? What impacts one impacts all!
