Catherine S. Owens, 90, of the 800 block of Philpotts Road, died March 9, 1996, at home due to natural causes.
She was retired and a homemaker. She was a native of Norfolk and the widow of Dr. John H. Owens, pharmacist and former owner of Booker T. Pharmacy. She was a member of Greater Metropolitan AME Zion Church, Norfolk, where she was a member of the Colonial Missionary Circle, member of the Stewardess Board (NU)2 of Greater Metropolitan AME Zion Church, and Order of the Eastern Star. She was a former member of the Tents, former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Norfolk Medical Society, former member of the Lindenwood Garden Club, member of Green Hill Farms Garden Club, and former member of Tidewater NAACP. She graduated from Pratt University School of Fashion and Design in 1928, and was part owner with her husband in Booker T. Pharmacy of Norfolk.
She is survived by her son, John Skinner Owens of Chesapeake; two grandchildren, John L. Owens and Katrina M. Owens, both of Chesapeake; daughter-in-law, Alvahdine W. Owens of Chesapeake; two nephews, Andrew N. Skinner of Norfolk, and Townsend Skinner of Portsmouth.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Thomas E. Tucker Jr. in Greater Metropolitan AME Zion Church. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk. Hale Funeral Home is in charge.
