Police Chief Gilbert F. Jackson plans to retire this summer after 20 years as law enforcement head in the state's largest city.
Jackson, 61, will step down July 1, city officials said Monday.
As chief, he oversees 113 sworn officers and 35 civilians. The sprawling 432-square-mile city has four patrol squads, detective and special investigations bureaus, animal control officers and a communications division.
Jackson has nearly 40 years' experience in police work. After four years in the Marine Corps, he joined the Norfolk Police Department, then switched to the newly created Nansemond County Police in 1970. That department joined with the Suffolk Police Department when the localities merged in 1974.
Two years later, Jackson was named chief.
No announcement has been made about how a successor will be chosen, but City Manager Myles Standish names all department heads. by CNB
