MARTINSVILLE TO DROP THE GREEN ON LATE MODEL SEASON

Martinsville Speedway has posted a record $90,720 purse for Sunday's Miller 300 Late Model Stock race.

Qualifying will be held Saturday for starting positions 1-20. On Sunday, four 25-lap qualifying races, beginning at 12:30 p.m., will fill positions 21-32. Four provisional positions will complete the field.

The feature event will begin about a half-hour after the final qualifier and will be divided into 100-lap segments. After the first segment, the field will be inverted.

The halfway leader will get $5,000 and the race winner $25,000.

AT LANGLEY: Langley Speedway in Hampton will open March 23 with practice for all divisions. Gates will open at 10 a.m. for inspection and licensing. Practice will run from 12:30 to 5 p.m.; admission to the grandstands will be free.

A Thursday practice session will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. March 28. Again, admission will be free.

The season opener will be Sunday, March 31. The pits will open at 10 a.m., with racing beginning at 3:30 p.m. Racing will shift to Saturday nights beginning April 6.

More than 100 events are scheduled for the '96 season. Langley has five weekly series and also will host Monster Trucks, karts, Enduros, Modifieds, MASCARs and mini-trucks.

AT SOUTHAMPTON: Southampton Speedway, on U.S. 58 west of Capron, Va., will open its fifth season of racing on April 13. For information, call 1-804-658-RACE.

AT EAST CAROLINA: East Carolina Motor Speedway in Robersonville, N.C., will hold practice and inspection sessions for its five weekly divisions from 1 to 6 p.m. the next two Saturdays. Admission will be $5.
