HELICOPTER ASSOCIATION AWARDS: The Tidewater Region of the Navy Helicopter Association has announced its 1995 award winners for extraordinary deeds and courage in the line of duty in the helicopter community. They are: pilot of the year, Maj. William Wainwright; air crewman of the year, Petty Officer 3rd Class Tom Speights; maintenance officer of the year, Lt. Cmdr. Patrick Menah; maintenance chief petty officer of the year, Master Chief Francis McCauliff; air crew of the year (embarked), Lt. Cmdr. Thomas Anderson, Lt. Cmdr. Kevin A. Bianchi, Master Chief Chris Mitchell and Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Benoit; air crew of the year (non-embarked), Lt. Joseph Balda, Lt. j.g. Robert Pearce, Petty Officer 3rd Class Mark Bafetti, Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Odom and Petty Officer 2nd Class Mario Vittone.
FORT STORY TRAFFIC REROUTE: Because the Shamrock Marathon will be routed through Fort Story on Saturday, traffic on the post will be rerouted from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. All vehicular traffic must enter through the East Gate, adjacent to 89th Street at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, and exit through the West Gate.
SINGERS NEEDED: The Daybreak Singers, an all-female group, needs singers and an accompanist. The 20-year-old chorale is made up of spouses of active-duty and retired military members who give volunteer performances for area military and community organizations. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Norfolk Navy Family Services' Retired Activities Office needs volunteers to look out for military retiree needs through referrals to specialists who can help in problem-solving. ARRIVING:
Detachment 2 of Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 6 returns today from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. The seven officers and 23 enlisted crew members were deployed on the replenishment ship Saturn, providing day and night vertical replenishment of supplies to ships in the 2nd and 6th fleets. The two helicopters are scheduled to arrive at 8:30 a.m. at Building LF-59, Norfolk Naval Air Station.
CHANGE OF COMMAND:
Vice Adm. John J. Mazach will relieve Vice Adm. Richard C. Allen as the commander of the Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, at a ceremony Friday. The 11 a.m. ceremony will take place aboard the aircraft carrier America at Norfolk Naval Base. Guest speaker for the event will be Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jeremy M. Boorda. Both Mazach and Allen were former commanding officers of the America, which is slated for decommissioning later this year. Mazach's most recent assignment was as director for strategy and policy for the Department of the Navy in Washington.
CORRECTION
A Feb. 28 ``Military Update'' column on the controversy surrounding establishment of a new Military Housing Authority contained quotes from a senior Pentagon housing official. The quotes were mistakenly attributed to Defense Secretary William Perry.
