The first organized effort to stop sportfishing in America gets under way in a few weeks. The same animal-rights organization that wants to end zoos and take animals out of circuses is leading the charge. PETA is the first animal-rights organization to come out publicly against sportfishing.
To help train for the anti-fishing protests, PETA has brought in Davey Shepherd of ``Pisces,'' a militant animal-rights organization based in England that has used direct confrontation and sabotage in Europe. Specifically, this group has been instrumental in having sportfishing banned in portions of England and Germany.
Demonstrations at tournaments and high-use fishing piers will be one of the first steps. PETA will target events that get the most media exposure.
