Cmdr. J. Keitt Pegues, 76, died March 8, 1996.
A native of Cheraw, S.C., he graduated in 1937 from Cheraw High School and joined the Navy, where he served 31 years, achieving the rank of commander. During World War II, he was a radioman on the USS Enterprise in the Pacific. In 1959, he earned a B.S. in electrical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.
After retiring from active duty, he served as director of buildings and grounds at Old Dominion University from 1970 to 1982. He was a resident of the Tidewater area for more than 40 years and a member of Baylake Methodist Church and the Norfolk Sports Club.
He is survived by his wife, Loneta B. Pegues of San Diego; a brother, Franklin J. Pegues of Worthington, Ohio; a daughter, Jeanne P. Smith of Virginia Beach; a son, John K. Pegues IV of Warrenton, Va.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held March 14, 1996 at 11 a.m. at First Methodist Church in Cheraw. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 5349 E. Princess Anne Road, Norfolk, Va., 23502. Norton Funeral Home is in charge.
