Leon ``Stump'' Thornton, 67, of the 6300 block of Avon Road, died March 11, 1996, in DePaul Medical Center.
He was a retired supply clerk for the civil service N.S.A. after 23 years of service. He was a native of North Carolina and a member of United House of Prayer for All People, Norfolk, where he was past president of Grace Soldiers, deacon, church spokesman and a member of the Church Business Board. He was a past member of the United Supreme Council 33 degree, and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army as a corporal.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Thornton; daughter, Jackie Thornton of Oxon Hill, Md.; three sons, Bruce R. Thornton of Virginia Beach, Thaddeus Thornton and Alan Thornton, both of Norfolk; brother, Charles Thornton of Norfolk; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Denise Thornton of Virginia Beach, Tonya Thornton of Norfolk; and several cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie and Isaac Thornton.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday by Apostle W.R. Scott in United House of Prayer for All People. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Shriners Consistory Service will be at Riddick Funeral Home, 1225 Norview Ave., Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. Family and friends will assemble at the residence at 11 a.m. for the procession to the church on Saturday.
