MABLE A. PENDERGRASS

Mrs. Mable Odessa Armstrong Pendergrass, 81, of 916 Southern Ave., died March 13, 1996, in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

She was a native of Elizabeth City and joined the Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church at the age of eight under the pastorage of the late Dr. J.R.R. McRay. She served the following positions at Cornerstone, the Sunday School Choir, the Junior Usher Board, the Junior Choir, the Missionary Choir, the Woman's Education Missionary Union, the deaconess of the church, a Vacation Bible School teacher, and she served and worked on several committees of the church. She was a charter member of the Cornerstone Cooperative Club, and was a charter member of the Cornerstone Historical Society. Mrs. Pendergrass was a member of the Junior Matrons Club, member of the National Association of Retired Teachers, and the National Association of University Women. She was a life member of the AKA Sorority, she was an associate member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and she was an in-take worker and counselor for the Albemarle Food Bank and Pantry. She was a worker for the TB Drive, the Heart Association, the Salvation Army, and for the crippled children. Mrs. Pendergrass is a member of the J.W. Hood Chapter (NU)33 Order of the Eastern Stars (PHA). She was a charter member of the North Carolina Order of the Golden Circle and she was a past grand officer. She was a charter member and an organizer of the J.W. Hood Assembly (NU)155 of Elizabeth City, and she is a member of the Arabian Court (NU)23 and Daughter of Isis of Portsmouth.

She was the daughter of the late Anderson Marshall Armstrong and Arlethia Holley Armstrong. She is survived by her husband, Houston Grant Pendergrass and a sister, Eva Armstrong Bethea of Elizabeth City.

A funeral service will be at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, Martin Street, Elizabeth City, at 1 p.m. Saturday by Dr. J.E. Trotman Sr. Burial is in Oak Grove Cemetery, Elizabeth City. A wake service will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at the Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church, Elizabeth City, with memorial and burial rites by the Arabian Court (NU)23, Daughter of Isis of Portsmouth, Va., J.W. Hood Assembly (NU)155 Order of the Golden Circle and by Hood Chapter (NU)33 OES (PHA). Stallings Funeral Home, Elizabeth City, in charge.
