Rosebud Cowan McCarthy, widow of Dr. John Linus McCarthy Sr. of the U.S. Dental Corps., passed away at Taylor Manor Nursing Home, Versailles, Ky. on Wednesday, March 12, 1996.
She was a longtime resident of Norfolk having been born in Bertie County, N.C. on Nov. 30, 1902. She was the daughter of the late Stark Smith Cowan and Rachel Vantilla Ruffin. She was a retired 37-year-employee of the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital, Norfolk, and attended Meredith College, Wake Forest University and Old Dominion University. She was a member of Ahoskie First Baptist Church, Ahoskie. She was an artist for over 40 years and was a member of the Elizabeth River Artist. She was preceded in death by a son, John Linus McCarthy Jr.; 10 brothers and sisters.
Survivors include two daughters, Lynn C. McCarthy of Frankfort, Ky., Jacqueline M. Ransdell of Raleigh, N.C.; two grandchildren, Jennifer R. Adams and Jeffrey E. Ransdell; 10 neices and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great nephews.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie. Burial will follow in the Highland Memorial Gardens.
