Labor Dept. sets guides on workplace violence

The Labor Department issued guidelines designed to reduce workplace violence, including homicides. Labor Secretary Robert Reich said the initial guidelines are targeted at the health care and social services industries, where about two-thirds of workplace violence occurs. Victims include doctors and nurses, pharmacists, home health care workers, nurses' aides and welfare workers. Guidelines will be developed for other industries including the night retail industry. Copies of the guidelines may be obtained by mail by sending a self-addressed label to OSHA Publications, P.O. Box 37535, Washington, D.C. 20013-7535. The guidelines also are available on the Internet at http://www.osha.gov under ``What's New.'' (AP) Animal crackers recalled due to label omission

Consolidated Biscuit Co. is recalling its animal crackers because the company did not list on labels that egg whites were used in the crackers. Some people are allergic to albumen, a naturally occurring substance in egg whites. The allergic reaction can be life-threatening. The cases were distributed last August. The recall involves 11-ounce boxes of Royal Crest, Funimals and Jungle Jammers brand animal crackers, and 15-pound boxes of the Danish Delight brand. One-ounce bags of Animal Grahams were also recalled. Anyone who has purchased any of the recalled products and wishes to return them for a refund can call (800) 537-9544.(AP) Passenger traffic up at Newport News airport

Passenger traffic at Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport jumped 36.8 percent in February - the second month in a row with that increase. February saw 24,956 people get on or off a plane at the airport, compared with 18,237 passengers in February 1995. January traffic was up 36.8 percent over the same month in 1995. ``January and February are traditionally our slowest months, so we are excited that again our traffic has increased in double digits,'' said airport commission chairman David Mercer. The airport is a terminus for three airlines and has 28 departures a day. (AP)
