A Williamsburg teenager was killed and three other youths were injured Friday night when the car they were in struck another in the 5900 block of Jefferson Ave. before rolling into a ditch and striking a parked car.
Robert Fitzgerald, 14, of the 500 block of Henderson Lane died when he was thrown from the Isuzu Trooper he and the other youths were in.
Onlookers pulled Fitzgerald from beneath the overturned vehicle, said Patricia L. Mahaffy, spokeswoman for the Newport News Police Department. Fitzgerald was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mahaffy said there were five teens in the Trooper.
The teens were driving down Jefferson Avenue faster than the posted limit of 45 mph at about 5:06 p.m. Friday.
When the Trooper changed lanes, it struck a black Hyundai and then went into a ditch along the right side of the road.
The vehicle came to rest against a parked car.
None of the teens, all students at Lafayette High School in Williamsburg, was wearing a seatbelt, Mahaffy said.
All other injuries were minor, she said, including one to the driver of the Hyundai.
Charges are pending. An investigation is continuing, Mahaffy said.
