HEAD-ON COLLISION KILLS WOMAN, 61, AND HURTS 4 OTHERS A TEENAGE DRIVER FACES CHARGES IN THE FATAL VIRGINIA BEACH BOULEVARD COLLISION.

A head-on crash on Virginia Beach Boulevard in front of the Central Library killed a 61-year-old woman Saturday and hurt four others, including a 2-year-old boy, police said.

Police spokesman Mike Carey said the collision happened around 4 p.m. when a Chevrolet Citation pulled out of a parking lot onto the boulevard and hit the rear quarter of a Buick LeSabre traveling in an eastbound lane.

The driver of the Buick lost control and veered across the grassy median into the westbound lanes.

The Buick then collided head-on with a Dodge pickup.

The force of the impact disgorged a battery from one of the vehicles.

The passenger in the pickup, Eleanor J. Pearman, of the 4200 block of Temple Court, was badly hurt and later died at the Virginia Beach General Hospital Trauma Center.

Her husband, George F. Pearman, was still in surgery at the same hospital late Saturday.

Both Eleanor and George Pearman suffered internal injuries.

The couple were on their way home to plant flowers, police said.

In the Buick, 32-year-old Rodney Lott and his 27-year-old wife, Cora, of Norfolk, were also hurt, but they were treated and released from the hospital.

Both front airbags in the Buick deployed in the crash.

The Lotts' son, Rodney Jr., was still in surgery late Saturday at Children's Hospital of The King's daughters.

Police said he also suffered internal injuries.

The Lotts were driving to a dealership to return the rented Buick when the crash happened.

They were only a few miles from their destination.

The driver police said caused the fatal accident, 19-year-old Brandon D. Carey, of the 300 block of Riverwood Court, was not hurt.

Brandon Carey is not related to the police spokesman.

Investigators said charges are pending against the teen. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
