ROCKFISHIN' FEVER

ILLUSTRATION: Color photo

DREW WILSON/The Virginian-Pilot

The opening of striped bass season Saturday brought out dozens of

fishing boats, many crowded with entire families, along the William

Umstead Bridge crossing Croatan Sound. The boats jockeyed for

position as anglers trolled and cast, hoping for striper strike. If

caught in North Carolina's sounds, the popular gamefish, also known

as rockfish, may be kept if it is more than 18 inches long.
