DEVOTED BOARD

As a parent of a child in the Virginia Beach school system, as well as an active volunteer therein, I have attended many School Board Meetings. I may not have agreed with all the School Board members at times, but I have always respected the office they held.

Countless hours away from families, constant telephone calls and letters - these are all part of the job of these School Board members. All have been totally devoted to the schoolchildren of Virginia Beach.

I am grateful for the many hours and great energies they have devoted to these children. I am sure they will continue working for and with the children, although they have stepped down from their board positions.

As for the special-grand-jury report, I have never read such vilification. The vitriolic criticism, maliciousness and spiteful remarks in that report absolutely appalled me. I have served on various boards with at least three of the citizens selected to sit on that special grand jury. They are respected citizens, genteel and good people. In defense of those jury members, I cannot imagine them drafting such a ``work.'' It certainly would enlighten me - particularly at election time - to find out the name of the actual author.

We must all work together to achieve success for our schools and our city.
