ALFRED NEWBERN

Alfred Newbern, 70, of the 500 block of Virginia Drive, died March 17, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital.

He was a native of Virginia Beach. He was a retired building contractor and a retired building inspector for the City of Virginia Beach. Mr. Newbern attended the Tabernacle Church of Norfolk and was a charter member of the Virginia Beach Community Chapel, which he was instrumental in founding.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Litchfield Newbern; two sons, Wayne Newbern of Salem, Ore., and Gary Newbern of Billings, Mont.; daughter, Karen R. Newbern of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren; a sister, Betty Thompson of Virginia Beach; and two brothers, Carl Newbern of Virginia Beach and Cecil Newbern of Washington, N.C.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Tabernacle Church of Norfolk. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, today from 7 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Norfolk Christian Schools or Tabernacle Church of Norfolk, for World Missions.
