A new superplastic developed by NASA will be used to coat Virginia's nuclear power plants in hopes of making them more efficient. Under an agreement to be signed Friday by Virginia Power, Virginia Tech and NASA Langley Research Center, the substance marketed under the trade name LaRC-SI will be applied to metal and concrete infrastructure components of the North Anna and Surry nuclear plants. It also will be applied to service water pipes, which must be cleaned regularly to remove small biological organisms that live in the lake or river water and attach themselves to the insides of the pipes. The hydroids affect the plants thermal performance, but are not a safety risk, officials said. (Associated Press) Clarification
