Nearly 4,000 runners and walkers took advantage of cool temperatures and clear skies Saturday to take part in the 24th annual Shamrock Marathon.
The race, which draws thousands of spectators and takes place along the Oceanfront, was won by Brad Hawthorne, 40, a resident of Tulsa, Okla., who flew into town Friday night and registered only one hour before the event began. He finished the race - 26 miles, 385 yards - in 2:18.23, five minutes ahead of his nearest competitor.
Racers came from all over the United States as well as Mexico, England and Kenya.
In addition to the marathon, the annual Shamrock run features a sports and fitness expo, a masters 8K race, an open 8K race, a 5K walk and a children's mini-marathon. ILLUSTRATION: Photos by L. TODD SPENCER

the Leukemia Society for Northern Ohio.

Kempter and Vincent Vega.

Troop 499 of the Boy Scouts. This is the second year the Scouts have
volunteered to help with the marathon.
