Construction is scheduled to begin on Smithfield Mews, a low-income, tax-credit apartment complex, within three months, the developer says.
The apartment complex on U.S. Route 258 in Smithfield will have 84 two- and three-bedroom apartments available, said Tara Masters, who works for Boston Financial Property Management, the company that manages several other similar apartment complexes owned by Smithfield Mews' developer, Mike McNamara of Richmond.
McNamara bought the 36 acres of property where Smithfield Mews will be built for $371,000 from Smithfield Properties.
The apartments, which are expected to be ready for occupancy by December, will have a variety of amenities, including a pool, weight room and washer and dryer hookups.
Although rent will be reduced based on an individual's ability to pay, all residents of Smithfield Mews will have to demonstrate stable employment and a good credit history.
McNamara owns several other tax-credit apartment complexes in the area, including Pilot House Apartments in Newport News and Rolling Meadows Apartments in Williamsburg. by CNB
