Dorothy Mae Godwin, 61, of the 5600 block of Godwin Blvd., died March 18, 1996, at Manning Convalescent Center, Portsmouth.
Mrs. Godwin was a native of Nansemond County and was employed with the Suffolk Public Schools for 14 years. She was the daughter of the late Coley Copeland Sr. and Alice Croker Copeland. She was a member of Greater New Hope COGIC Suffolk, and a former member of Friendship COGIC. Mrs. Godwin was president of the YPWW, Sunday school teacher, Home Fund Mission, church choir member, and a license missionary.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Elder Jessie Lee Godwin Sr.; a daughter, Barbara Thomas of Norfolk; seven sons, Terrance E. Godwin and Darryl K. Godwin, both of Portsmouth, Samuel L. Godwin, Ricky C. Godwin, Alexander Godwin and Jessie L. Godwin Jr., all of Suffolk, Dana J. Godwin of Albany, Ga.; four sisters, Florine Mason and Frances Taliaferro, both of Philadelphia, Eunice Wiggins of Chesapeake, Florence Robinson of Suffolk; seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. by Elder Herbert Hunter in New Mt. Joy COGIC, 307 County St., Suffolk. Burial will follow in Christian Home Baptist Church Cemetery, Windsor. A wake for Mrs. Dorothy Mae Godwin will be held at Greater New Hope COGIC Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. The family will receive family and friends at the home of her niece, Ms. Sharrell Clemons, at 3720 Burr Lane, Portsmouth, and for the procession to the church on the day of the service. The remains of Mrs. Dorothy Mae Godwin rest at Crocker Funeral Home, Suffolk.
