After conducting an extensive nationwide search, officials with the state Division of Marine Fisheries selected one of its own employees as deputy director.
Jess Hawkins, who has been acting chief for the Fisheries Management Section since January, will begin his new duties April 1, officials said Wednesday.
His annual salary will be $63,231.
Hawkins has worked for Division of Marine Fisheries for 18 years.
He joined the state division in 1978 as a biologist. In 1986, he was promoted to biological supervisor.
From then until January, he served as district manager for the Pamlico, Beaufort, Craven and Hyde county areas.
In that position, Hawkins coordinated activities of nine working committees that develop fisheries management policies and rules.
The North Carolina Wildlife Federation named Hawkins Conservationist of the Year in 1994 for the contributions he has made to conserve resources and improve the state's environmental quality.
Hawkins, 40, is a 1977 zoology graduate of the University of North Carolina.
