Portsmouth Public Schools will send 26 teams of elementary school students to compete Saturday in the 11th annual Great Computer Challenge.
The Challenge is sponsored by WHRO, the region's Public Broadcasting System affiliate; the Consortium for Interactive Instruction, a user-funded agency managed by WHRO; and Old Dominion University.
The teams represent 14 schools in the city. They will compete against about 500 students from 17 school divisions and 13 independent schools in the categories of graphic arts, telecomputing, desktop publishing, primary publishing and LOGO Programming.
The competition will be held at Smithfield High School. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., the competition at 10:30 a.m.
The Challenge, conceived as a competition for students of all ages, was split last year into two events to accommodate increasing numbers of entries. This week's events are for students through fifth grade. The senior event, grades 6-12, will be May 11 at the ODU's Webb Center, in Norfolk.
Portsmouth elementary schools that will be represented Saturday include Churchland Academy, Churchland Primary, S.H. Clarke Academy, Douglas Park, Highland Biltmore, James Hurst, John Tyler, Lakeview, Mount Hermon, Olive Branch, Park View, Port Norfolk, Simonsdale and West Haven. by CNB
