There is a lot of talk about sex discrimination and women's rights. I believe that the traditional role of women as ``keepers at home'' is the best model. Now, before you ``feminists'' explode, let me explain. Maybe you will see my point of view.
There is a woman that I know who is a real lady. She has been married for 21 years. She has seven children and had two miscarriages. No abortions, though. She believes abortion is murder. Her youngest is 8 months and the oldest is 19 years. She is kind and loves her family dearly, although she does get tired because of staying up with the baby at night.
I am the 19-year-old, and this lady is my mom. You can bet on it that I love her, too. In the morning, she fixes my lunch and makes my breakfast. I go off to work and in the evening when I get home, Mom is in the kitchen making supper. The lights are on, the house is welcoming. Mom smiles and says ``Hello, how was your day?''
She is willing to listen when I need to talk and gives me good counsel when I need it. Her and Dad love each other, and show it. Matter of fact, ``with them around, who needs Hollywood?'' Because of their openness, I can observe how husband and wife should relate to have a good marriage.
Mom also teaches my sisters how to be young ladies and how to care for youngsters. She gives us boys ideas on how to be gentlemen.
Do you see why I love her? She has sacrificed most of her adult life for her children and her husband, my dad. You may have a good career, be a good soldier, perhaps a CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Fifty years after you are dead, where will you be? What will people know of you then? Will the world be any better?
Children will absolutely better the world, or worsen it, long after you are gone. Mothers influence the world from their graves by their children, and grandchildren. With God's grace, my momma's children will have bettered this world by the time they die, and my ``old-fashioned'' momma will be right after all.

Salem Road Tax increase is wasted on buying up farmland
Our City Council voted a real estate tax increase last year of 2.5 cents to help pay $3.5 million a year for 25 years or nearly $90 million total to owners of farmland to not develop their land (Jan. 3 Beacon story). This is a complete waste of our tax dollars, since our city will be getting nothing in return for this $3.5 million a year.
Use this income for our school system where it is needed now.
Most citizens know our mayor and City Council members, so call them, write them and tell them you want them to use these tax funds for the school system.
If they don't we can make some changes at the polls in May.

Virginia Beach This shopkeeper proves trust is alive and well
On a recent Saturday, my husband and I traveled from our home in Suffolk to Virginia Beach looking for a certain type of lamp. We ended up at Shomier's General Merchandise on Virginia Beach Boulevard, where I did find just what I wanted plus a couple of other things.
One was finding that there are still some very trusting individuals out there, a nice young man by the name of John. I was about to make a $160 purchase, when I discovered I had used my last check. He suggested that I take the items I was buying and mail him a check when I got home. Wasn't that something special in today's time? John definitely made an impression on me. It's no wonder that Shomier's has been in business for 26 years.
