IF ALL GOES according to schedule, South Norfolk will have its first major tourist attraction by this time next year.
The Chesapeake Museum and Information Center is scheduled to open in January 1997 in the old Portlock School on Bainbridge Boulevard, said J. Pat Kallaher, the city's building and grounds supervisor.
Renovations to the school and its grounds are due to get under way within a month, Kallaher said. A contractor, Spencer Building Corp., has been hired and designs are finished.
``I'm looking forward to getting it started,'' Kallaher said. ``These citizens in South Norfolk have been working on it for many years. And it's happening.''
The city will spend about $750,000 to renovate the building and grounds, Kallaher said.
More information about the museum is available by calling Pauline B. Dennis, president of Chesapeake's Museum and Information Center Inc., at 545-1155. Donations to the project may be made by sending checks payable to CMIC to P.O. Box 5012, Chesapeake, Va. 23324. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photos by MORT FRYMAN
