John Robert Hudgins Jr., 32, of the 1000 block of San Juan Drive, a firefighter for the city of Chesapeake, died Monday, March 18, 1996, in the line of duty.
Mr. Hudgins was born in Norfolk and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mr. Hudgins was assigned as a firefighter specialist with Engine Company (NU)3 and had been with the Chesapeake Fire Department for the past 10 years. He was a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2449. During his service he received the following certificates: Ropes and Initiatives; Confined Space Awareness; Emergency Vehicle Operation Course; Emergency Medical Technician; Firefighter Level I, II, and III; Radiological Monitoring Course; Driver/Pumper Operation; Hazardous Materials Level I and II; Incident Analysis; Instructor I, Fire Incident Reporting; and Airport Firefighter. He also received the following commendations: Unit Citation Award for Life Saved, September 1993; Unit Citation Award for Life Saved, August 1993; Letter of Commendation of Outstanding Services at a fire, Dec. 24, 1993; Letter of Commendation-Freak Accident, May 22, 1993; Letter of Commendation-Emergency Medical Call, May 20, 1991; and Letter of Commendation from Farm Fresh for fire, Nov. 20, 1990.
Survivors include his wife, Allison Smith Hudgins, and son, Jordan Hudgins; his mother, Barbara Elizabeth Liverman Rawls of Chesapeake; and his father, John Robert Hudgins Sr. of Virginia Beach.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 412 Scarborough Drive, Chesapeake, by Bishop W. David Miller. Interment will take place in St. George, Utah. The family will receive friends at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chesapeake Fire Department Memorial Fund, NationsBank, 304 Albemarle Drive, Chesapeake, Va. 23320.
