Felice Nelson Gilbert-Rubin, life-long resident of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, died Saturday evening, March 23, 1996 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, from cancer.
Mrs. Rubin was founder and director of Town and Country Day School for 25 years, 1954-1979. She was an award-winning agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., and senior citizen volunteer coordinator for RSVP in Norfolk from 1984 until her retirement in 1994.
Mrs. Rubin graduated from Maury High School and Old Dominion University, where she received two degrees in education. She was a member of Delta Sigma Lambda Sorority, Hadassah, and Ohef Sholom Temple and its Sisterhood. She was active in community theater for 35 years, appearing in ``How Now, Dow Jones?,'' ``Fiddler on the Roof,'' ``Carousel,'' ``Picnic,'' ``Plaza Suite,'' ``The 5th of July,'' ``Anything Goes,'' ``The Hot L Baltimore,'' ``Forty Carats,'' ``Take My Wife,'' ``Everybody's Girl,'' and ``Paris Is Out'' with Pat O'Brien, among others. Her last performance was in November, 1994, portraying the grandmother in Neil Simon's ``Lost in Yonkers.'' She also did radio commercials for the last 15 years and was a favorite at the Komedy Klub in Virginia Beach.
Mrs. Rubin is survived by her husband, Archie Rubin of Virginia Beach and her children, Gary and Eleanor Shumaker of Fairfax County; O.L. (Buz) and Phyllis Gilbert of Virginia Beach; and Edward and Consuela Gilbert of Orlando, Fla.; her grandchildren, David Gilbert, Shana Gilbert, Laura Shumaker Casey, Lucia Shumaker and Heather Gilbert; her step-grandchildren, Nicole Emanuel and Stacy Emanuel; her sisters, Raye Nelson (Mrs. Jerome) Cohen of Virginia Beach and Molly Nelson (Mrs. Bernard) Leshner of Philadelphia. Other survivors include her stepdaughter, Linda Rubin Marne of Virginia Beach and stepgrandchildren, Lisa Marne, Maria Sabol, Gina Ammay and Aaron Ammay; her stepson, Ira Goldberg of Cherry Hill, N.J.; and her stepgranddaughters, Sarah Goldberg and Rachel Goldberg. She also had 11 nieces and nephews, Judy Wood, Shelby Nelson, Vicki Kalfus, Barbara Silverstein, Ellen Brewer, Stuart Cohen, Susan Katz, Marsha Goldman, Steven Feuerstein, Owen Leshner and Sandra Hollin. She also had many great-nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Rubin, daughter of the late Morris and Sadie Nelson, was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Harry Gilbert; her brother, Edward Nelson; and her sister, Lillian Nelson (Mrs. Nathan) Feuerstein.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, at the Colonial Avenue Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
