James William Mathews Jr., 86, of the 2000 block of Wyoming Ave., died March 23, 1996, in a Portsmouth hospital.
Mr. Mathews, a native of Portsmouth, was retired as a marine machinist from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 37 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Portsmouth; a Mason for more than 50 years; past master of America Masonic Lodge (NU)330; charter member of America-Fellowship Masonic Lodge (NU)148; Mount Horeb Royal Arch Chapter (NU)11; Portsmouth Commandery (NU)5 Knights Templar; Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies; past patron of Fellowship Chapter (NU)140 O.E.S.; United Commercial Travelers Council (NU)298.
Survivors include his wife, Caroline T. Mathews; a son, James E. Mathews of Portsmouth; a sister, Emily Galladay of Lynchburg, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland, by Dr. Walter Kennedy. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. A Masonic Service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with visitation following. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be sent to the Building Fund of First Presbyterian Church.
