James Carlton Craig, 79, died March 23, 1996, in a local hospital.
Mr. Craig was born in Pounding Mill, Va., and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Portsmouth and Portsmouth Toastmasters Club. He retired as a lieutenant commander from the Navy after 20 years and also retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as head of the Safety Department.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Alexander Craig; two sons, James C. Craig of Chesapeake and Tompkins A. Craig of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Marie Ottavanio of Baltimore, Thomas F. Craig of Portsmouth and Margaret Elizabeth Craig of Chesapeake.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by Father Tom Mustard. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Maplewood Cemetery, Tazewell, Va. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Friends desiring to view the body may call at the funeral home after 11 a.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
