Evelyn Kittrell Thaxton, 76, formerly of Portsmouth, died March 24, 1996, in Lebanon, Tenn.
Mrs. Thaxton, the widow of Walter H. Thaxton, ret. lieutenant colonel, was a native of Portsmouth. She was president and a member of the Gray Ladies' Assn. in various areas, and a member of Virginia Red Heads Semi-Pro Women's Basketball Team.
Survivors include a daughter, Gay Bennett Cerny of Portsmouth; three sons, Walter H. Thaxton, Dr. Stephen Thaxton, Barry J. Thaxton, all of Lebanon; a brother, Vernon F. Kittrell of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren, Paul and Stephanie Thaxton, Shawn Javorich and Kim Crowe, Ben and Alex Brown, Jamie Brown; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Olive Branch Cemetery by Dr. Albert A. Peverall. The family will receive friends at the Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, today from 7 to 8 p.m. and other times at 608 Meadow Creek Court, Chesapeake. There will be a memorial service held at 4 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, Lebanon.
