Discovery Zone files

for bankruptcy protection

Indoor playground operator Discovery Zone filed for bankruptcy protection from its creditors. The company, which started in 1990 and now has about 350 outlets, said it grew too fast and will have to renegotiate rents on many of its storefronts and close other money-losing centers. Under the Chapter 11 bankruptcy law, the company will be able to continue operating while it revamps. The company said it was too early to say how many stores would be closed or how many employees would be affected by the Chapter 11 filing, and that it would examine each store on a ``case-by-case basis.'' (Associated Press) Ford recalling 118,000 Explorers/Rangers

Ford Motor Co. said it is recalling 118,000 Explorer and Ranger vehicles - designed for sale in southern California - because of a brake defect. The company said the 1991-94 model sport-utility vehicles may have defective fasteners that attach the brake master cylinder to the brake booster assembly. The fasteners can break, causing a loss or weakening of brake power, Ford said. There have been 141 reports of the defect, with nine leading to minor injury accidents, Ford spokeswoman Francine Romine said. Ford said it would repair the defect free of charge. (AP) Cox applies with SCC to offer phone service

Cox Communications Inc. has filed an application with the State Corporation Commission to offer a wide-ranging local telephone service in Hampton Roads and Roanoke. Cox made the filing last week. It said the service would be provided through a subsidiary called Cox Fibernet Commercial Services Inc. Cox has said for several years that it planned to seek permission to offer the service, which would be offered in Hampton Roads in competition with Bell Atlantic Corp. and GTE Corp. AT&T and MCI are among others that are seeking to offer local phone service in Virginia. (Staff) Power company puts site on the Internet

The Internet address for the site is http://www.vapower.com (Staff)
