HAWKING THE DECK: F/A-18C Hornet pilot Lt. Jim Rossi, of the ``Rampagers'' of Strike Fighter Squadron 83, based at Cecil Field, Fla., and ultimately destined for Oceana in Virginia Beach, gets a Hawk's view of the Norfolk-based carrier Enterprise as he returns to its deck following a training mission in the Caribbean Sea that concludes April 1. The Enterprise and Carrier Air Wing 17 are completing the final phases of their battle group training before deploying overseas this summer to relieve the carrier George Washington battle group.
ARTIST EXHIBITS NAVAL PRINTS: Frances Smith, a local artist who has drawn more than 100 ships and is currently stationed at Norfolk Naval Base, is displaying her work at the Hope House Foundation Thrift Shop, located on Monticello Avenue in Norfolk. Smith has been doing the pen-and-ink renderings for the past 13 years. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Smith's prints will benefit the Hope House Foundation, which provides supported living services to people with developmental disabilities. NEW COAST GUARD COMMAND: In an effort to streamline its daily operations at seven support centers and five bases located in the 5th District, the Coast Guard has opened the Integrated Support Command in Portsmouth. In the past, a variety of units and staffs provided finance, personnel and information resources to service members and their families. The new command, which opened March 22, centralizes these services at the Portsmouth Coast Guard Support Center. CUTTER OPEN TO PUBLIC: Coast Guard Cutter Aquidneck will be open to the public while docked at Portside in downtown Portsmouth from 4 to 8 p.m. April 2 during the city's Spring Fling event, sponsored by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce-Portsmouth.
MARINES SPONSOR ESSAY CONTEST: The Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, located at Norfolk Naval Air Station, sponsored an essay contest for students at Hermitage Elementary School in Virginia Beach. Seven students wrote essays on the topic of citizenship; those who participated received a certificate and special honors, and they helped Marines with a morning flag-raising formation on the base March 21.
RESERVES CHOSEN BEST IN NATION: On March 16 the Norfolk Naval Air Reserve Force received the Ens. C.H. Hammann Award for the second consecutive year. The Hammann is presented annually to the most efficient and effective naval air reserve command in the nation. In addition to the presentation, the Naval Reserve Safety Center 0186 was established the same day. The safety unit's primary mission will be to support the Norfolk Naval Safety Center with the development of Navywide safety analysis programs.
KOREAN WAR VETERANS REUNION: Volunteers are needed to help plan the second annual Korean War Veterans Reunion, to be held in Virginia Beach Oct. 15-20. Help is needed for legal assistance, accounting and computer services; volunteers will also work to locate more than 1 million Korean War veterans and inform them of the reunion. DECOMMISSIONING:
More than 25 years of service ends in a retirement ceremony for the salvage ship Edenton at 10 a.m. Friday at Pier 57 West of the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. Rear Adm. Edward K. Kristensen, commander Logistics Group Two, will be guest speaker. Commanded by Cmdr. John Paul Johnston, the ship had a crew of eight officers and 112 enlisted personnel.
