Perry Morgan's March 17 column (``Sinking John Warner could cost GOP a seat,'' Perspectives) fails to accurately assess the situation facing the Virginia GOP.
John Warner is probably history, but he will be hoist by his own petard, not by those who resent his opposition to Farris and North.
Having lived in ``Yankee-occupied Virginia'' in Manassas for nearly two decades, I can speak with some authority about how the conservative Republican voters think of John Warner. I can also assure you that the state Democrats couldn't ask for a better scenario than being able to vote in the primaries for their favorite senator only to stiff him in the general election in order to give Chuck Robb a fellow Democrat as his distinguished colleague. The primary is Warner's idea.
Frankly, Virginia probably will be better off - at least it'll be represented by two Democrats instead of one Democrat and a Republican who thinks he's a Democrat. I deeply regret the two votes I gave John Warner and wish I could go back to Virginia just to vote against him in atonement for my lapses in judgment.
