``Working but losing'' (Commentary, March 3) is a fact of life today, not only here but in Great Britain, France, Germany and even to some extent in Japan. The struggle between unbridled capitalism and overindulgent socialistic programs continues. The answer lies in compromise.
Education is the key, not only to the future, but perhaps to our very existence as a world leader. If we do not change soon, we risk a very real danger of another era of grave civil strife in the mid-21st century; only this time the struggle will be between economic classes - the rich and the poor, with the disappearance of our present middle class.
We must educate and compromise, becoming a mature society with humanistic goals as well as materialistic ambitions. I foresee a future in which Americans will go fishing more often, attend formal school for the first 22 years of life and have little admiration for our corporate-takeover moguls.
