Dr. Romulus Leary May Jr., 78, of 1800 Dante Lane, formerly of 143 Pinewood Road, Virginia Beach, died March 24, 1996, at his home.
Dr. May was born in Bolton, N.C. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees at Georgetown University. He did his internship at the National Naval Medical School in Washington, D.C. His residency in general surgery was done at the Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and he was a senior surgical resident at Georgetown University. His post-graduate work in surgery was completed at the University of Pennsylvania and his residency in thoracic surgery was done in St. Albans, N.Y., at the U.S. Naval Hospital. Dr. May was a diplomate of the boards of both general and thoracic surgery. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Medical Association. He retired from the U.S. Navy Medical Corps with the rank of captain, U.S. Navy. Dr. May was in private practice for many years before retiring in Virginia Beach.
He is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth ``Lisa'' Dellinger and her husband, Dan, with whom he made his home; sons, Romulus Leary May III and Alan F. May, both of Virginia Beach; sister, Kathryn MacDonald of New Bern, N.C.; brothers, A.K. May of Coral Gables, Fla., William J. May of Isle of Palms, Fla.; grandson, Andrew S. Dellinger of Greensboro.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. today in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Monsignor Pharr Tuition Fund, in care of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 2205 West Market St., Greensboro, N.C. 27403. Forbis and Dick Funeral Service, is in charge.
